Best outdoor toys for toddlers (summer 2018) that kids will actually play with
Sandbox fun equipment
1 | Big vehicles
Necessarily including a bucket, shovel, and rack!!
Toddlers love playing with sand and enjoy that they can actually change something in their surrounding. They develop their motor skills, creativity and learn basic physical laws of our world.
Any list of best outdoor toys for toddlers without sand toys is just a big mistake!
I know that if I won’t take our toys, the Active Boys will look for the stuff brought by other kids (ok, they will, anyway). Big cars, a bucket, and a shovel are their outdoors essentials when they can play in a sandbox.
Easy to take with you and always attractive for little kids. When we don’t take our ball and the Younger sees any ball on the playground, he will chase it.
It’s a durable toy, with no small parts 😀 and rather hard to destroy.
This brand offers different sizes so a little kid doesn’t have to struggle with a ball designed for a grown-up man. Their balls are constructed to be really durable, with excellent shape retention and not losing air.
Oh, and Wilson traditional soccer ball is NCAA’s championships official ball.
In case you’re looking for something more colorful.
There’s something in the big push toys (and vacuum cleaners 😉 ) that toddlers love. I see many kids in our neighborhood going out with their toy mowers and actually playing with them. And in our family…
I think that in our home it’s probably the longest used toy. We rotate toys but this one has never been in the basement!
Active Dad bought the toy mower (without any consultation with me!) when the Older was almost one year old. The packaging said the mower is for kids 2+ year-old. But the mower was used since the first day and it’s still used, now loved by the Younger.
Something small and easy to put it into mom’s bag
6 | Bubbles
They fit into mom’s bag and I haven’t seen a situation when any kids stopped playing it before they run out of the liquid (or poured it out). Here I link to a no-spill version of the popular thing.
Have you ever wondered that so much long-lasting fun is produced just by a plastic circle and a detergent?
Vehicles for toddlers
The good, old bike will long be on the list of best outdoor toys for toddlers, older kids, and adults too!
Last summer + autumn I was exactly five times on a walk with the Older (then 3-year-old) without his bike. Five times and we were outside at least every other day.
The bike never got boring for him.
It’s a nice thing, combining physical activity, being outdoors, taking sunrays and inhaling fresh air and training a skill which kids probably will use in their adult lives.
Speaking of bikes and longer walks, think about buying a helmet. This one is adjustable for kids about 3-7 years old.
8 | PlasmaCar
When the Older is driving his adult bike, the Younger races on his PlasmaCar which we got second-hand from Boys’ aunt.
My Son enjoys it and drives or just sits on it for quite long when we’re outside.
I’d recommend it for kids 1.5-year+, maybe up to 3-year-olds and not 3+ as it stands on the producers’ website.
9 | A scooter
We don’t have a scooter, because we’ve bought a bike for the Older and we want to keep things simple, so the bike is at this time enough.
But Boys’ cousin and many kids in the neighborhood are driving on their scooters like crazy, for a long time not leaving them to start another play.
Speaking of scooters and longer walks, think about buying a helmet. This one is adjustable for kids about 3-7 years old.
Best outdoor toys for toddlers for a garden/backyard
10 | A sandbox
Toddlers love playing with sand. I know it not only from our family experiences but also from observing kids in the neighborhood.
If you have kids aged 1-4 or have grandchildren in this age and you have the possibility to put a sandbox in your backyard, do it. Just make sure that you have a cover for when it’s not used to keep the sand clean and dry.
Wooden sandboxes look good. I’ll always choose natural material when there is an alternative to plastic.
11 | Water play tables
Play with water is contact with nature and fun while exploring the mechanical laws of our world.
It’s a safer version of playing in a swimming pool.
12 | A trampoline
Don’t even adults dream of such a fun? Trampoline is surely one of the best outdoor toys for toddlers and older kids too.
My mom’s friend is a grandfather and his kids often leave their toddlers at his home. Isn’t he tired because of taking care of the kids? No.
He says he puts them on the trampoline and he is free 🙂
